The THEORY TEST and HPT (Hazard Perception Test)
At Walkers School of Motoring, we recommend studying for theory test alongside taking practical lessons.
The two complement each other and go hand in hand when learning to drive.
The theory test was introduced in 1996 and is a written exam about driving theory.
The exam is a multiple choice style and is done on a touch screen computer.
You must score at least 43 out of 50 in order to pass.
To study for the exam you will need a copy of the highway code (RRP £2.50 or viewable online for free!) ,
The theory test question book and a Theory DVD which simulates the actual test and the HPT.
There are lots of useful products out there to purchase online, from good book shops and also from
Walkers School of Motoring directly.
You do not need to pass the theory test before you take practical lessons, however we recommend applying for the test as early as possible.
You can apply for the test online on the DSA website. You will need your provisional license and a fee of £23 pounds is payable.
Once online you will be given a choice of local test centres and test dates. The average waiting list is about 2 weeks.
Alternatively, Walkers School of Motoring offer a booking service and we will make all the required arrangements for you with an additional booking charge.
In 2002 a hazard perception test was introduced and is now a necessary requirement in addition to the written test.
The test candidate is shown a series of video clips containing developing traffic situations filmed from a drivers perspective.
The testee is required to click a button when he notices a potential danger or a developing hazard.
The response times are measured and scored over a series of 14 video clips containing 15 hazards in total, each scoring between 1 and 5 points.
A total mark of 44 out of 75 is required to pass the test.
Both the HPT and the written test must be completed successfully to receive a theory test pass certificate.
The theory test pass certificate is the required for booking your practical test date. It is valid for 2 years, so ensure you book your lessons as soon as possible.
